Mt. Rainier 30-Year Vow Renewal

Field Notes: Mount Rainier National Park, July 2024

Ashton here. I gotta say, this one was a real treat for me. Yeah, it was a beautiful day, a beautiful place. But mostly because these are my parents 🧡

My mom is the reason I do what I do — she got me into photography. Growing up, my dad ran a frame shop and my mom worked as a photographer. My first job was working as her assistant and second shooter. Honestly, when I was younger I didn’t expect myself to fall in her footsteps so closely. But after going to college for music and realizing it wasn’t for me, I went on a big long trip (which included my first visit to Seattle), and I took my camera with me. I realized how close to home it all was, how innate and ingrained in me the act of taking photos really was.

It was such an incredible honor to bring them out to this little corner of the country I call home, and to give them the same experience I get to give other couples, complete with the whole picnic spread and planning out this little mini-adventure. My husband Dale officiated their vow renewal ceremony and the words he wrote had us all in tears. I can’t believe I was still able to function and take photos while hearing my parents re-read their handwritten vows to each other. My dad was able to say his vows based on a list of bullet points.

I’m a perfect blend of the both of them. My dad is the mathematician, the socialite, the doer—my mom, the empath, dreamer, the artist. They complete each other perfectly. I am so thankful to have watched their love growing up, seeing such strength and steadfastness. Plus they’re just so darn fun and adventurous—they don’t let things like getting older in the way of the lives they continue to live.

Anywho—I could reminisce and wax emotional about these two all day. Here, hope you enjoy these photos, they’re worth even more than my words 🧡

Planning to elope or renew your vows at Mount Rainier? Here's what you need to know:

  • Get in touch with a local photographer/planner — The first thing you'll want to do is secure your photographer! Even if you don't know exactly where or when you want to elope, it's good to reach out as early as possible. Many elopement photographers (like us) also double as your planner and can help you with the logistics along the way. They'll be able to help you pick a location and help you pin down a date! I highly recommend looking for someone local who knows the ins and outs of the area, including those hidden gem spots like this one. Plus, that often means no extra travel fees!

  • Elope on a weekday — Weekends can be overwhelmingly crowded pretty much anywhere you go in the region, especially in the busy season (April through October), so I highly recommend picking a weekday for your elopement. You’ll end up with less crowds and a far more intimate experience.

  • Permits — You'll need a special use permit for ceremonies within Mt. Rainier National Park. You'll also need a national park pass, and in the busiest summer months, you will likely need a timed entry reservation to enter the park.

  • Seasonality — Mt. Rainier has a lot of super high elevation areas which are not always accessible or free of snow. Picking a date in mid-July though mid-October grants you the best access to most trails. Aim for mid-July through mid-August for the best wildflower blooms! The park is technically open year round if you don't mind strapping on some snowshoes and getting out there outside of peak season, which can also be a great way to beat those crazy summer crowds.

  • Leave No Trace — Please make sure to leave no trace as you go out for your wedding adventure. Don't leave any litter or decorations, stay on existing trails, and be respectful of other park visitors. Eloping in the wilderness is a privilege, not a right!
