Qiukui & Ray's Alpenglow Sunrise Elopement at Mount Rainier

Mt. Rainier is one of the best places in Washington for a sunrise hiking elopement, and this day is the perfect example of how to blend adventure and wilderness with a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by loved ones — a true best of both worlds.

For a place as popular and iconic as Mt. Rainier, crowds play a huge factor. Summer here can at certain times feel a little like Disneyland — packed parking lots, crowded trails, long lines at the entrance station.

Luckily these two were totally up for an adventure and agreed to a sunrise hike at one of my favorite trails in Mt. Rainier — this one gets you away from the main crowds at Paradise. We started in the hours before dawn and marveled at the stars on our way up, then enjoyed one of the most gorgeous sunrises I’ve ever seen with incredible alpenglow on Tahoma.

They chose this moment to read their vows to each other — a just-for-them moment before the big ceremony later in the day, with their guests.

After our morning hike we gathered with their guests at their cozy A-frame cabin in Ashford, Washington for an intimate ceremony and breakfast celebration.

If you're dreaming of a Mt. Rainier National Park elopement that mixes rugged backcountry beauty with time to be present with your people, this approach is a fantastic blueprint—especially for couples who want both adventure and comfort in one day. (And who don’t mind getting up early and beating the crowds!)

Want to Elope at Mt. Rainier?

A few important things to know:

  • Book your photographer early — Especially for peak season! I help couples with scheduling, trail conditions, permits, and the best timing for alpine light. Local knowledge matters on a mountain as moody as Rainier.

  • Choose a weekday — Sunrise elopements + weekdays are the secret to privacy. Weekends get crowded, and trailhead parking can be a nightmare—especially during peak season (July through October).

  • Permits — Rainier requires a special use permit for ceremonies inside the park, and pretty strict guidelines on days of week, group size, and locations. Get in touch and we’ll help you figure out what you need.

  • Seasonality — Seasonality can be tricky here in these high-elevation alpine zones, between snow, road/trail access, and crowd management. Typically July through October are the best windows — tell us what you have in mind and we’ll help find a date and location that works for you.
