Catie & James's Full-Day Hiking Elopement at Maple Pass

These two wanted iconic views and a real adventure for their wedding day — I told them, look, you aren’t gonna get more iconic than Heather - Maple Pass. This ~7 mile hiking loop in the North Cascades (technically Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest) offers some of the most incredible views in all of the Pacific Northwest.

But it comes at a price: crazy crowds. By 8 am the parking lot can be totally full, especially in peak summer, or early fall when the larches are poppin’. This is no hidden gem — it’s in the top 5 most trafficked trails in the entire state, and for good reason.

But that’s not ideal for an intimate, secluded, “just us” adventure elopement experience.

So my answer? Get up really fricking early.

We picked a date outside of peak season, before the crazy summer crowds, and I was studying the weather and snowpack carefully in the weeks preceding to make sure we were prepared — backup plans in mind in case it wasn’t open yet.

Then we set our alarm clocks early. We hit the trails at 3:00 AM — surprisingly not my earliest start, but one of them! — and made our way up to the pass.

I really admired Catie & James for how they approached their adventurous wedding day: they weren’t interested in the details, the frills. She didn’t even bother with flowers — the meadows would do that. They let nature be their decor. I’ll never understand. Some couples spend thousands of dollars decorating a ceremony venue or a reception hall — the national forest offered this for free and blew any wedding venue out of the water.

You just have to climb a mountain.

Sunrise hike to Maple Pass

Notes from my field log: Started at 3 am – so so early! So fun starting in the dark and hiking to the top. Cloud drama and morning light was beautiful. Love seeing the snow still on the higher peaks, adds a lot of contrast and drama. Got to our overlook and exchanged vows in the most iconic ceremony spot with Lake Ann below. On the way back, enjoyed wildflowers and views. Maple pass without a crowd felt unreal!

We lucked out with the weather—called for rain later in the day, 100% clouds, luckily we were below the cloud base so we got amazing mountain views; saw a deer on the trail; had the whole trail to ourselves :)

Intimate vow exchange with insane mountain views

This seriously might be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever witnessed for a ceremony. And we had the whole place to ourselves. Unreal!

The journey back

I'm such a huge fan of sunrise elopements — you get to start the day off in such an incredible way, and it can feel truly surreal. Waking up in the hours before dawn. Lacing up your boots, walking through the wilderness by the light of your headlamp. Seeing the sky change and brighten — finding that perfect spot to say your vows just as the sun crests into view.

Then the whole rest of the day is yours.

The journey back down feels like a celebration — you’ve done it. You’ve climbed a mountain together and now you get to enjoy the rest.

Want to Elope in the North Cascades?

A few important things to know:

  • Plan ahead — The North Cascades are remote, rugged, and wild—perfect for couples craving adventure for their elopement. I help couples navigate trail conditions, fire closures, seasonal access, and which areas are in the National Park vs. National Forest.

  • Choose a weekday — Even though North Cascades is quieter than other areas of Washington, its most iconic overlooks and trails (like Maple Pass) still see weekend crowds in summer and early fall, especially around larch season. Weekdays are your friend — and sunrises are your best friend.

  • Permits — For ceremonies inside North Cascades National Park, you’ll need a special use permit. Many popular areas (like this one) are actually on national forest land, which has different rules. Get in touch and we’ll help you figure out what you need.

  • Seasonality — Seasonality can be tricky here in these high-elevation alpine zones, between snow, road/trail access, and crowd management. Typically July through October are the best windows but each year is different — tell us what you have in mind and we’ll help find a date and location that works for you.
